One of the strengths that I have developed over my student teaching experience is recognizing and exploring all of the different factors that are involved with behavior issues in the classroom. It is important to recognize that children are acting out for a certain reason. It is our job as teachers to look at what is going on in environment as a whole.I am now a firm believer in the pyramid model. The pyramid model if for promoting social emotional competence in infants and young children. It is important to first make sure that there are systems and policies in place that promote and sustain the use of evidence-based practices. Next, we must ensure that nurturing and responsive relationships are occurring between the staff and the children. Supportive responsive relationships among adults and children is an essential component to promote healthy social emotional development. Then, we must look at high quality supportive environments. High quality early childhood environments promote positive outcomes for all children.Once these things are in place, it is necessary to have targeted social emotional supports in place. Systematic approaches to teaching social skills can have a preventive and remedial effect. If all of this is in place, then that is when we look forward to intensive intervention. This includes assessment based intervention that results in individualized behavior support plans.
